Which material has which properties?

Bedsheets have been made of cotton since around 1860, due to their ease of processing. Cotton, mostly in the form of jerseys (which is also often used in shirts), is now the most common material. But other materials are also regularly used for bed sheets, have interesting properties, and can therefore represent a real alternative to cotton.

Microfiber bed sheets: fine and dimensionally stable

Microfiber is woven from particularly fine synthetic fibers and the surface is then slightly roughened. That's why the material feels so velvety and soft. Many small air chambers and pores form between the fibers, which makes the microfiber very absorbent. Such bed sheets are especially suitable for the warm season. It absorbs sweat at night and thus ensures a comfortable sleeping environment. Microfibre laundry is elastic and retains its shape even after many uses. If the washing machine isn't too full and the microfiber isn't spinning too strongly, you don't even need to iron it.

Beaver and flannel bed sheets: warm and fluffy

Beaver and flannel denote a cotton fabric that is sanded on one side. This roughened the fibers, which is what makes the fabric so warm and fluffy. This makes beaver and flannel a good choice for the cold season. On winter nights they keep you warm like hardly any other material, and you save ironing with these materials.

Mako and glossy satin bed sheets: cool and shiny

The special type of weave used to produce satin is called a satin weave and causes the surface of the textile to be as smooth and shiny as it is typical for satin. Due to its cooling properties, satin bed sheets are particularly recommended in summer. mako satin is a variant made of cotton that is refined by a bath in caustic soda. This process makes the fabric shiny and resilient. In addition to cotton, glossy satin also contains polyester fibers. The shine of this textile mixture lasts a particularly long time and withstands many washes without losing any of its color strength. If glossy satin is only spun briefly, it is not necessary to iron the fabric.

Tip: You can usually iron satin on the highest setting without any problems. To be on the safe side, take a look at the manufacturer's label beforehand.

Jersey bed sheets: easy care and supple

There are two different types of jerseys, both easy to care for and supple. Double jersey is particularly elastic and hard-wearing thanks to a special knitting technique. Pillow fights or numerous washes can hardly harm the supple fabric. A double jersey is slightly thicker than a single jersey and keeps you comfortably warm on cool nights. The thinner single jersey is ideal for hot summer nights because of its high absorbency. If you pull jersey sheets into shape after washing them, you don't need to iron them.

Linon and silk bed sheets: smooth and noble

Linon is a durable, smooth material made of cotton. He doesn't mind high temperatures when ironing or washing. The structure of the surface is a bit rough and reminiscent of bed sheets. Linon is extremely absorbent and therefore takes a little longer to dry completely after washing. If you like it particularly classy, ​​you can also use silk bed sheets. The material is particularly fine and beautifully thin so that the cover refreshes in summer without weighing it down. In addition, silk is very skin-friendly and suitable for those who are allergic to house dust.

Seersucker bed sheets: loose and airy

You can recognize seersucker by the characteristic pattern of smooth and ruffled stripes. The creped effect is created by the different tension of the fibers and by a special processing technique. Seersucker is mostly made of cotton and is iron-free. Due to the irregular structure, the fabric does not lie directly on the body everywhere. This allows the air to circulate freely and ensures a cool sleeping environment in summer.
